Moore Hall 1840

Moore Hall

In the late 18th Century George Moore I returned to Ireland from Alicante, Spain. He made his fortune trading wine & iodine, to build Moore Hall, a 35 room, 3 story mansion on 800 acres of land with the entire estate eventually extending to 12,000 acres. Cut limestone steps led to a high pillared portico, where a massive oak door opened to an elegant entrance hall.

On the left was the Victorian-style dining room with oak panelled walls, where the family had their meals and where President John Moore signed the Proclamation of Connaught in 1798. Right off the hall was the drawing room, decorated in Greek classical style, where guests were entertained. A first-floor summer drawing room had large window openings and a balcony overlooking Lough Carra.

The extensive library included precious items such as a manuscript copy of the Annals of the Four Masters. All books and papers were lost when the house was burnt. Family quarters on the second floor comprised of bedrooms, a nursery and a private chapel with a 17th-century Spanish silver chalice.

The basement and brick-vaulted cellars included a kitchen, wine cellar, and servants quarters with separate access to the courtyard, farmyard, and kitchen garden.
